Agnes Gonxha Bojaxhiu is a persona that impacted my life in several ways and brought some positive changes to it. She gave me a better view on life and of what I want to be in my life by affecting the people around me in spiritual ways. Her perception of the humanity is exceptionally selfless. The dormant humane part of my personality has been awaken by her devotion to help the helpless including the diseased and unloved citizens. Her unconditional love for people served as her greatest influence in the society. Maybe, some of you are not familiar with her identity and that is acceptable because Agnes Gonxha Bojaxhiu is more renowned as Mother Teresa of Calcutta. I would imagine that some of the readers might laugh at me after reading this paper for different reasons for I am writing about the things that people would not frequently hear from me. To have a helping hand just like the one that Mother Tereza possessed is almost next to impossible. Imagine yourself caring for someone who is very ill and was proven to be carrying a contagious and deadly disease. An ordinary person would not disregard the possibility of catching a harmful illness. However, that relates to ordinary people whereas Mother Tereza even worked hands-on to help cure the unfortunates. During her first trip to help the poor she said, “The poverty of the poor must be so hard for them. While looking for a home, I walked and walked till my arms and legs ached. I thought how much they must ache in body and souls, looking for a home, food and health.” This is the realization of a person who gives intensive attention to the predicaments of other people. This is the example that we need to live up to. Every day we are blessed by The Supreme Being with a shelter to live in, sufficient food to eat, loving parents who care for us, and a normal life to enrich while some live in inadequacy. We have so many good and necessary things in our lives; however, we do not realize that we have so much to be grateful about, and thus, we still feel that we need more and dare to ask for more. Her deeds taught me to appreciate the blessings that I have received, and to be grateful for I do not have to suffer like the poor and homeless. These are just few examples of the impact of Mother Teresa on my life.

In this part of my essay I would like to refer to some of the accomplishments of Mother Teresa to make everyone understand why I picked her as my heroine:

  • Mother Tereza was first recognized by the Indian government, which awarded her the Padma Shri in 1962.
  • In 1969, she was awarded the Jawaharlal Nehru Award for International Understanding.
  • In the year 1979 the Nobel Peace Prize was awarded to Mother Tereza.
  • In the year 1971 Pope Paul Vl awarded Mother Tereza the first Pope John XXlll Peace Prize.
  • In 1991 there were 168 of her homes operating in India.
  • In April 1997 a movie was filmed called “Mother Teresa.”
  • Mother Teresa accepted all these awards because of the poor.

If we scan through the accomplishments of Mother Teresa, we will notice that they are all relevant to her selfless love and sympathy for the poor, homeless, and dying.

We live in a society where people care about money and success the most; where people care about a celebrity’s birthday or a new fashion trend, and not about those who are in need. All my life I have wanted to achieve goals for my own benefit and I have almost forgotten that I once made a commitment that I would try to change our society for the better by helping those people who are unable to support their own lives because of sickness and/or age. In fact, I felt very guilty when I had forgotten the effect of Mother Teresa’s work on my life. Perhaps, it is true that experiencing new things in life creates a tendency of forgetting the past. Indulgence with technology and modernization made me forget about my inspirations in life. However, I realize that I cannot blame the development of our society for the lost of my spiritual and humanitarian values. I cannot be as perfect as Mother Teresa but I will do my best to follow her examples. If anyone asks me whether I might change my beliefs and whether it is possible that something alters my thoughts about my heroine, my answer will be simple and unequivocal, no. Yes, I am guilty for forgetting about her impact on my life but when it came back to my senses, it has now even a stronger impact on my humanity. No matter how many times I will be interrogated about this matter, my answer will never change. Emotionally, mentally and spiritually rejuvenated is the feeling that I have acquired from learning and applying the ideals of my heroine.

I am proud to say that my heroine does not need to have all the media attention or political status or super powers to make positive changes to my life because her own ways as a selfless person gave way to her success as a perfect humanitarian.
